5. We heard that you played with Woe, Is Me, how was that?
Bryan: It was probably the best performance we have ever put on as a band and one of the greatest crowd reactions we have ever received.

Michael: The crowd was fucking awesome. We had a great time.
Zero: We stole that shit.

6. If you were to fuck, kill and marry one of your band mates, who would it be and why?
Bryan: Kill Jordan, fuck Michael, marry Zero.

Zero: Fuckyourgodatops.

10. What’s the most embarrassing fact about each other?
Bryan: I go to college.
Jordan:  I smell like mountains.
Michael: Gorgan smells.

Jordan: The ultimate tour would go as follows; Full European tour with Bring Me The Horizon, Underoath, Architects, A Beautiful Nightmare.
Michael: The Word Alive, in Japan.
Zero: Nine Inch Nails all over the fucking universe!

13. If you were a Disney villain, who would it be and why?
Bryan: Bob from Twin Peaks.
Jordan: Jafar. Because his name starts with J.
Michael: Oogie boogie.
Zero: Capt. Hook, because he’s a pirate and he’s the cleanest on the ship and he kills whoever the fuck he wants.

14. Would you rather get a tattoo of your face on each others dick or dicks on your faces?
Bryan: Could we have each others dicks tattooed to our dicks?
Jordan: Well… if tattoos are being spoken about I would rather set up a donation fund so I can finish my sleeves and stuff! Jordan Hollywood Oman is now taking donations if you want to help!
Michael: I have to decline this offer. Dick tattoos and face tattoos are against my religion and quite frankly I’m upset that you asked.
Zero: How about my dick tatted on your face?

15. Last but not least, promote yourself :)
Bryan: If you want to listen to a band that is actually trying to do something to progress music as opposed to try and rip each of their peers off with the same stage show, same sound, and same image just for the sake of having the same fans to come to their shows and buy their music like every band in this scene is doing nowadays, come check us out. We have our full length cd coming out in September. Come out to a show and help support musicians who are doing it right. PS. I have a solo cd coming out soon ; P

INTERVIEW - Natalie Bisignano: Publicist @ Equal Vision Records!

All of you who read our Eisley review or Sherri Dupree interview might be interested to learn that we’ve managed to score an interview with their publicist Natalie Bisignano, who not only works with them but plenty other bands. I suggest any or all of you people interested in a career in the music industry specifically as a publicist should get ahead with this:

Please state your name and what you do?

My name is Natalie; I handle all publicity for Equal Vision Records.

When did you decide that you wanted to be a publicist? and what prompted the decision?

NB: While I was at AIR MTM doing my internship. I was working on regional press for the incredible jazz trumpeter, Abraham Wilson and I had confirmed some features/previews in online/regional newspapers along his tour but there was one interview in particular that has always stood out as a turning point to me. I snagged a great radio interview for him and I remember my supervisors turning the station on in the middle of the work day and everyone listened along. It was just one of those moments where I realized, “Wow. I did that. I set that up…” It’s something I’ll never forget and I still love that feeling of seeing/hearing the results of my hard work and being able to help further someone’s career.

What university did you go to and what course did you specify in?

NB: For undergraduate and graduate school I went to the University at Albany, which is in upstate NY. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Rhetoric with a minor in Business Marketing and a Master of Arts in Organizational Communication.

When did you start in the profession you are currently in?

NB: I’ve been doing publicity at Equal Vision Records for a little over a year now. My first taste of working in the music industry was in my last semester of college where I did an internship at AIR MTM in London UK in 2008, in their publicity department. I couldn’t have asked for a better first internship - my coworkers were brilliant and they let me dive right in by doing regional publicity. There’s no better way to learn how to do something than to be given a task and having to figure it out how to accomplish it all on your own. After completing that internship, I moved to New York City and did internships at Universal Music Group in Corporate Communications and at MTV Networks with mtvU/College Media Network. While in grad school I focused on staying involved in music by doing an internship with NoteworthyPR and writing for Substream Music Press and various freelance writing/photo outlets. In my last semester of school I did an internship at Equal Vision Records and also wrote my thesis on the label. A few months after graduating, they called me up and asked me to come back to work full-time!

When did your career “officially” begin?

NB: I’d say that my career started when I was hired here at Equal Vision in June 2010. Everything leading up to being hired at EVR was really important - I don’t think I would have ended up here without the exact sequence of internships, school and various industry experiences - but my actual career in publicity and the music industry didn’t truly start until I was hired full-time here.

Bands that you work for/with?

NB: The entire Equal Vision family! Right now we have about 24 bands on our current roster. Some are more active than others with touring and putting out music but they’re all phenomenal and so much fun to work with. It’s amazing that I get to work with such a diverse lot of artists, ranging from metal to indie to pop and everywhere in between. Some artists with upcoming releases include Say Anything, This Time Next Year, We Came As Romans, Set It Off, I the Mighty and The Dear & Departed. That’s just a handful of our entire roster, but even just in that group you can see just how many different styles of music we represent. It keeps everyday interesting and exciting, for sure!

A band you would like to be a publicist for?

NB: It sounds cheesy but I really couldn’t ask for a better roster of artists than I already have. I genuinely love this label and the music that our bands create. We have so many talented artists; I am extremely lucky to work with such a great roster.

What do you love about your job?

NB: Seeing results! Being able to see our bands grow from baby bands who are just starting out, develop musically and professionally into artists who are on the cover of magazines and headlining tours is absolutely incredible. As an intern, I remember doing mail-outs for We Came As Romans’ debut full-length album to press outlets and sending out their posters to venues when they were just the opening act on some smaller tours. Now they’re selling out venues around the country as the headliners, touring internationally and I’m coordinating their photo shoots for magazine COVERS. It’s pretty wild to see how far we’ve both come in just a couple years.

If you weren’t a publicist what would you be?

NB: I was originally planning on working in advertising, somewhere between the design side and business side where I would mesh the two together and be able to use my creative skills. The music industry swept me away though and I have no regrets! I also really love photography, but it will likely always just be a fun hobby for me.

Funniest thing that a bands done/or funniest thing you’ve experienced while working for a band?

NB: Oh, I don’t even know where to start! All of our bands are really funny. I remember when ORBS stopped by our offices last year, Ashley and Goose sang country tunes to us in deep southern drawls and danced around the office - including one fancy duel high-kick that they showed off. Ashely also sang songs from the movie “Fieval Goes West” to us. I’m not quite sure how that came about but it was so spot on. She is one of the most entertaining people I’ve ever met, such a sweetheart. I almost always end up laughing to the point of tears when I watch Chiodos’ video updates; specifically ones with Brad Bell dancing and/or raising Prince up (his puppy that he brings on tours with him) to the tune of The Lion King. Texas In July is another group that’s really kindhearted and full of hilarious antics. I want to make a sound app of all of the hilarious things that they say with their Pennsylvania accents. It wouldn’t be nearly as funny if I quoted them in a written interview, but they are definitely some of the funniest guys I know. And Brad from This Time Next Year is pretty much like a little brother to me, he’s always trying to prank me and get me all riled up haha. As you can see, everyday is an adventure with my roster haha love it!

A motto you live by?

NB: I don’t really have a specific motto, but I just try to live my life in a manner where I’m always working as hard as I possibly can and looking forward to what’s next. There’s always more to be done and more to achieve. If I had to choose a motto though, I’d say, just be yourself! I’m all about being honest and true to who you are.

Someone who inspires you and why?

NB: So many people! I look up to a lot of entrepreneurs, especially photographers, graphic designers, writers and anyone else who has become successful through their creativity. Two bands that I completely admire musically and creatively are Mutemath and OK GO. Everything they do is so mindblowingly interesting and unique. I actually get a little bit jealous when I think about it haha they definitely inspire me to push myself to think outside of the box.

The most ridiculous thing someone has said to you (a band member, a fan of a band you were working for, etc..)

NB: I can’t think of any specific examples but really, every conversation that I’ve ever had with Joshua Moore from We Came As Romans. We’re both extremely sarcastic…I can’t even imagine what people think when they hear our conversations haha.

Advice for people who want to do what you do?

NB: Be nice to everyone! Make sure you’re working in the industry for the right reasons. And be prepared to work 24/7. Publicity isn’t for everyone because it’s one of those jobs that you can never completely check out of, you need to always be available and thinking ahead to what’s next.

Get involved, meet people, and work hard - whether you’re volunteering at a venue, working on a street team, interviewing bands, or interning at a label -always make the most of what’s available to you. There’s no such thing as “downtime” at an internship or a venue, there’s always something productive that you can find to do! And don’t just wait for opportunities to come your way…if nothing is readily available in your area, create your own opportunities. Book your own shows, start your own website, find online opportunities, etc.

INTERVIEW - A Lifelike Story

For fans of All Time Low, Mayday Parade and the Maine, A Lifelike Story is a hard working, self-funded pop-punk band from New Jersey. They have just finished a very successful unsigned band tour, we got a chance to interview lead singer Bryan Welsh.

Check it out here:

1. Hey guys, can we get your names, age and what you do in the band?

Bryan: Hey I am Bryan and I’m the 23 year old lead singer and guitarist.

2. For all the kids who have never heard of you, how would you

describe your style and music in 10 words?

B: A pop-rock band that expands beyond the normal pop mold

3. How did this band come together?

B: The original three person line up came together because we were all from the same town and went to the same high school.  We all had other projects and one day decided to get together and we clicked.  For our most recent tour we added a second guitarist that we found online actually.  It all just fell into place.

4. Do you have any aspirations for the band?

B: I think most every band’s goal is to be headlining huge festivals/tours and to be traveling around the world while making music.  And of course that is something we are working toward as well but we also want to be able to connect with our fans on a whole other level.  Fan interaction is a very important thing for us and as we grow as a band and new doors open that is the one thing that will never be left behind.  Lastly to grow as musicians; to be able to learn something new and apply it will only help us grow.

5. What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever done?

B: I had these fans get a hold of my number once and one of them ended up stalking me for a short period of time.  Not on an overly psychotic level or anything but it was still pretty creepy.

6. The funniest thing a fan has ever said to you?

B: A fan once compared me to a stuffed dog.  They saw a video update that we had posted and at the time I had longer hair so in the video I lifted my hair up to make ears and barked like a dog.  At the next show they brought me a stuffed dog and compared me to it.  It was pretty awesome I must say.

7. If you had the chance to tour around the world with a band, who would it be and where would you go?

B: Every time we get this question I can never pick just one band because there have been a bushel that have been influences on me and I think it would be awesome to tour with any of them.  Some would include Panic! At the Disco, Butch Walker, Dashboard Confessional or All Time Low.  I’ve never been to Europe and we have had a good response with our EP over there so I think it would be awesome to be able to share our music with our fans on that side of the globe.

8. What’s your biggest pet peeve when you’re performing on stage?

B: Not too many things usually bother me while on stage.  I have a good time interacting with the fans and what not.  The one thing I guess that grinds my gears is when a venue makes me use their instead of my own and once we start playing their mic doesn’t work or the cord is faulty.

9. If you were a hobo, what would your cardboard sign say?

B: “We’re all just people”

10. Last but not least, we know that you guys have an album coming out, promote yourself.

B:We actually just released our acoustic EP ‘In the Right Light’ and our full band EP ‘Never Have I Ever’ is also out.  Both are available at every digital retailer worldwide.  We love to talk to our fans and interact so make sure you talk to us on our Facebook (facebook.com/alifelikestory) or follow us on Twitter (@alifelikestory).

Pierce The Veil Sign to Fearless Records

Pierce The Veil have left Equal Vision Records and they have inked a deal with Fearless Records. Read the official statement from the band below.

Hey everyone, Vic here!  We have a very big announcement. After 7 years of being with the amazing people at Equal Vision Records, we have decided to part ways with the label and move on. We will dearly miss the staff and everyone there who have truly become our friends after all these years. When we first signed with EVR, we had heard about their strong reputation for being more of a “family” than a corporate label, and I can honestly say that this has remained true to this day. You have supported us from day one, and we will forever be grateful to you for giving us a chance and changing our lives. So, to everyone at EVR, we would just like to humbly say thank you for all of the hard work that you have done over the years. You continue to inspire us and we have nothing but love for you always.

Since we formed Pierce The Veil, we have had the strong mindset of “progress or die.” We feel that if we don’t keep pushing ourselves to do new things and get better at what we do, then there is no point in doing it. We are always looking forward to the future and we can’t wait to share it with all of you.

So with all this said, we are very proud to announce that we have signed with Fearless Records!! And just like we do with our fans, we never take anyone’s support for granted, so big thanks to the staff and everyone at Fearless, we are truly excited and grateful to be a part of this label.  We’ve got tons of amazing tours and new music ahead of us! PTV is currently writing and will be doing some AWESOME tours in the Fall, including South America, Europe, and a US Co-Headliner with Miss May I that we’re calling the “No Guts No Glory Tour!” Can’t wait for you to hear the new stuff and to see all of your sexy faces at the shows!

Much Love,

INTERVIEW - Alannah Diamond

Alannah Diamond is known for her work in PR and A&R. At a very young age of 20, she has done an amazing job with unsigned and signed bands, having been on tour herself, we got a chance to talk to her about all of it!

Check it out here:

1.Hey Alannah, would you please tell us your age and what you do?

Alannah:I’m twenty years old, (twenty-one in March, which is a huge deal in the states!), and I work as an A&R (artist and repertoire) and PR (public relations) agent for various musicians in the industry. I’m familiar with booking, management and tour management as well, but it my real calling and forte is definitely in the press aspects of the industry.

2. How did you start working in A&R and PR?

A: Well, as corny as it sounds, and as over phrased as it is, I owe it all to my family. My father was the first PR person for the Motown industry back in the day, and hearing all of his stories, and seeing how far it’s carried him truly inspired me to get my own start. My father’s always been passionate about writing, being an author, editor, and newspaper correspondant. However, his real passion was helping the musicians who deserved it most, get their fair time in the spotlight. It seemed nothing was more rewarding to him, and so, with a shared love of writing and music alike, I figured it’d work just the same for me. And hey, it has!

3. What do you think of the job?

A: If it gives you any idea as to my personal opinion at all, I don’t even think of what I do as my job. It’s more of my passion. While it is a source of income, and does require hours upon hours of time-consuming work, it’s a total blast. I love working side by side with some amazing musicians, and people on the media side of things. The connections I make become stronger and stronger every day, and it feels great to see the excitement of the artists I work with when they seem themselves in a magazine, or on the front-page of a website or blog. It also feels incredible to help build up the confidence of some of my musicians. Sure, they can get on stage and give you a knockout of a show, but, a lot of them choke up when it comes to talking to the press. Knowing I can help open some doors and guide them through everything feels great. So many individual members of bands I work with have totally opened themselves up since gaining press exposure and experience. So, all around, it’s definitely more rewarding than anything.

4.Hardest part about being a lady in the media world?

A: While everyone might think the days of gender-based equality have safely arrived, there are still some tension about being a woman in the music industry. For example, a lot of bands have the mindset that girls will be “overdramatic about everything”, or simply want to sleep and party with the band, as opposed to do any real work. Truth of the matter is, couldn’t female musicians say the same about males working in the industry? Either way, it’s been a long road, especially being younger, proving that I am out to work, and not goof around. Sure, I’m nice, and I’ll even maintain solid friendships with some of my clients, but, I know where the line is, and that work always comes first.

5.One of the best things about the business?

A: One of the best things about the business is that there’s a wide variety of people to work with. Rarely do I work with the exact same sounding band, with the same story. Every musician has their own style, and own stories to tell. I feel like it’s opened my mind even more as an individual, and given me so much newfound inspiration as a musician, myself. I’m so impressed by the talent I see, and so encouraged by the stores of hard work and passion I hear from these musicians. It’s refreshing to know that there really are genuine people, with their hearts in the music for, well, the music!

6.And the worst?

A: A major downfall is that there are major con-artists and scammers out there, and you have to beware. I’ve learned by trial and error, always have a contract drawn up, and always have everything in writing. Some people will definitely try and take advantage of people’s hard work, and think that they can take all the credit, without paying, or addressing their end of the deal. It’s a shame that people freeload. While being a musician doesn’t always pay well, if you’re hiring a paid agent, you have to uphold your end of the deal. Keep in mind that it’s not always so easy for us financially, either. But like musicians, we do this because we love it. Also, at least give us a little credit! We’re out to help you, so we could use a little help and publicity of our own, too. It seems too much to ask these days.

7.If you could change one thing about the business, what would you change and why?

A: If I could change one thing, I’d stop making it so much about the money, and more about the music. Much like sports, or art, music should be about raw talent, and not having the money to put on a charade that makes you out to be someone you’re not. So many people are paying to have music written, composed, and fully done for them, and then using thousands of dollars of equipment to help them put on a killer live show. Cool, you have money, and sure, you got fancy gadgets, but, tell us, what inspired your music? Oh right, you couldn’t, because it’s not your own. That’s exactly how it feels. So many talented bands get looked off, and don’t get the money put into them to help boost them up and put them on a radar, because these million-dollar backed bands are taking up space and at the forefront of the radars because of the dollar signs in the industry’s eyes. It’s a real pity. I respect what producer’s and composers and songwriter’s do, but, there are people who do all those things for their own bands, who just get overlooked.

8. What is one thing you want people to know about your line of work?

A: . I think it’s important for people to know that what we do isn’t exactly easy! Every word we say is held to us, so with e-mails, business calls, business meetings, and networking, we have to watch what we say, and carry ourselves very well. One wrong move, and certain facets of the industry won’t be as willing to work with our clients or ourselves, or will make it much more difficult. This means, you as clients have to be kept in line, too! If you set a good example and carry yourselves well, people will be more likely to dish out your name in a positive manner, and keep working with you. Scoring you the best deals on ad placement relies heavily on both how you’re perceived as musicians, just as much as it is on us as agents.  Thinking about what you say and do before you say and do it is crucial, and keeping yourself in check is always key.

9.What else do you do apart from A&R?

A: I mentioned it briefly earlier, but, I do booking, management, and tour management as well. I have experience in merchandising (it’s a lot more than turning your swag on to some stuff, believe me!), and I’m also a musician myself. I’ve worked in a few signed and prospectively signed bands, but I’m working on my own music for now, to find something that makes me happy genre wise, so we’ll see that where that all takes me in the future!

10. Do you have any advice for the younger generations who want to do your line of work?

A: My best advice is to get started early, but, know what you’re getting into beforehand. One wrong move, and you could end up blacklisted by major media personnel and major clients. So, try your hand at an internship, or get some high school or college courses relevant to communications, PR, and writing under your belt - they will help tremendously. Also, having Google Docs breaking down magazine clients, radio clients, television clients, online clients, etc, and having all of their contact information organized will help you tremendously in the long run. Always keep your docs updated with new sources of media you find, too, whether a major media source, or a smaller one, each will help your clients out and help you build up your credibility. And above all else, don’t get in it for the money, because I guarantee you it’s a competitive world. Not to say you can’t make it financially, but it’s the same odds as being a musician. So, do it because you love it!
