The Merch Dude is known to not be known for who he is. Not a lot of people know his real name. Nevertheless, he is an amazing Merch guy and we are terribly lucky to get a chance to talk to him about merching.
check out the interview here:
1. Good day sir! first of all, how old are you and why did you choose to start selling merch?
The Merch Dude : I am old, I didn’t choose to do merch, merch kinda fell into my lap.
2. How old were you and how did you start merching?
TMD: long story short a friend of mine became famous and he asked me to tour with him as his personal assistant and I saw merch and took it over and haven’t stopped since.
3. How was your first time selling merch? any stories?
TMD: It was easy the artist at the time was not selling much merch so I had a piece of paper with the name of each shirt per size and I would do a check mark every time I would sell one. That quickly changed when merch started selling like crazy after that I needed a laptop and spreadsheets.
4. What is your biggest pet peeve when you’re on the road?
TMD: I have one and it’s that I put my things in the same spot as well as in the bay of the bus every night like my computer bag and my travel bag. Touch them, move them or worst of all put your bag on it and I will lose my shit (in silence)
5. What is your biggest pet peeve while working on the merch table? (rude customers, weather..?)
TMD: Just read my tumblr I have too many to fit here!
6. Scariest tour experience?
TMD: Watching the trailer pass our bus because it got unhinged go by 4 lanes of traffic. Thank God it missed the incoming traffic!
7. The funniest and craziest things people have said to you while on the job?
TMD: I have seen so many boobs on tour and have been asked to kiss a girl, when I told her I was married she said I won’t tell her and my wife was right next to me and said “she would know”
8. Who would you like to tour with, why and where would you go?
TMD: Foo fighters! Because they still rock better than most of them! Everywhere!
9. If you had to switch jobs for a day but could still be a band crew, what job would you take and why?
TMD: Sound guy! Because they don’t have to deal with people all day asking the same questions like “how much is that $30 shirt?”
10. Do you have any advice for the younger generations or anyone who wants to pursue your line of work?
TMD: Remember if you decide to tour for a living never forget that as fun as it can be it’s a job and a job that many other people can do and do better than you, so enjoy it have fun and don’t be a dick!
